Understanding Payload Capacity

Payload capacity is the total weight your truck can safely carry, including passengers, gear, and a camper. It's calculated by subtracting your truck's curb weight from its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Exceeding your payload can damage your truck's suspension, brakes, and drivetrain — and may void your warranty.

Where to Find Your Numbers

GVWR

Look at the yellow sticker on your driver's door jamb. Your GVWR is the maximum loaded weight your truck is rated to carry.

Curb Weight

The best way to know your true curb weight is to drive your truck (empty, with a full tank of gas) to a CAT scale. You can also find an estimate in your owner's manual or on the manufacturer's website.

Camper Weight

Use the wet weight (with water tanks full) for the most accurate calculation. Manufacturer dry weights often understate the real loaded weight by 200-500 lbs.
